Mothers, Fathers and OB/GYNs

Friday without a doubt was probably one of the greatest days of my life. It was also probably one of the strangest. I experienced things on Friday that I could of never imagined in my wildest dreams. Friday morning started off with an ultrasound of my wife's lower abdominal section which revealed the first picture of our little one. What a crazy and amazing experience. As I mentioned earlier we got to see the little guy/gal's heart beating and totally unexpectedly we saw the baby start shaking and moving around. Crazy!!! I also got to see a picture of my wife ovaries. Which was even crazier. Our ultrasound identified the source of E's spotting and bleeding. Apparently the bleeding is coming from a source outside of the gestational sac. Fortunately for us, the gestational sac looks good and E's cervix has closed properly. The bleeding should not effect the baby. We'll have to monitor it, but the bleeding doesn't look like a sign of miscarriage according to the hospital.

However the strangest thing that happened on Friday was that I got to sit in on an abbreviated pelvic exam for my wife. I don't think I'll every be the same again. Let's just say I've got new respect for women everywhere. Fortunately I brought copy of Friday's WSJ to the exam. Guys, if you opt to go to the exam definitely bring something to hide behind.

Our OB/GYN was really nice. He was totally cool with me being in the room. Seeing how this is the guy that's going to be delivering our baby I figure we should probably start getting use to one other. FYI--Your OB is going to tell you a lot of stuff which is going to make you worry even more about the whole birthing process. He or she is going to tell you about all the risks facing your baby. Listen to the Doctor, but try to take it with a grain of salt. Once your OB tells you about all of the risks you'd never think it was even possible for healthy babies to be born, but they are, hundreds of thousands of times each day. I figure we can probably thank all of the trial attorneys for the additional warnings.

So E and I are in business and it's wonderfully terrifying.
